Basement is a very important part of the house and can give another full floor of living if designed properly. Its interior designing needs different rules and principles than the rest of the home interior. There are unique aspects like absence of natural lighting and ventilation in the basements that have to be kept in mind before designing it.

It is always preferred to seek professional help as it requires specialized and experienced skills in the area. They have been trained in design schools with special courses on the subject and with experience in the field they know all the tactics to deal with the uniqueness of basements.

There are some things to be kept in mind before planning to design a basement. They may cost you a little more than you expected so always plan it ahead and get it done in parts if money is an issue. First of all you have to decide the purpose you want the basement for. Like some people want to make separate living place to give it on rent, some want to make a game room for their children and others may like to have a music room.  The designer needs to know all what it is going to be used for. Even if you have hired a professional you have to work hand in hand with him in the entire decision making process. This initial planning is very important because it will show how much time, effort and cost it will involve

As basement are at the lowest level of the house either underground or slightly above it they need artificial lighting. Windows can be treated for compensating for the absence of natural light. Faux windows can also be used with a little additional expense. Another problem to be dealt with is the absence of natural ventilation in the basement. Air conditioning and vents have to be installed and they should be planned before deciding other things like furniture etc.
